18% of tomatoes

We spent only one night in Reykjavik, and after a meeting with our officiant, we left the city for for some serious landscapes.

On our way to our next Airbnb we stopped for lunch at Fridheimar. Definitely you need to make reservations in advance. I called them from the car at 1pm, and the next available table was not until 3pm.

The greenhouse restaurant shares a space with a competitive horse training ring and a few private residences.

There’s plenty of parking, and I knew it was a popular spot, but I did NOT expect to see your buses full of people getting out to eat. It’s not exactly on the beaten path, but I guess close enough to the Golden Circle to count.

Fridheimar is one part restaurant, five parts greenhouse. The main dining area is in a tomato greenhouse. They had several others that were not open to the public and in fact proclaim to provide 18% of all the tomatoes in Iceland.

Tomato soup, bloody Mary’s, even tomato cheesecake (we had it, it’s divine).

This was also our first real taste of Icelandic bread, and it did not disappoint.

Of all the dishes we tried, the tomato cheesecake was my favorite, followed by the “tortilla”…a pizza by any other name.

It was a charming experience and I hope to see more of these truly farm-to-table experiential dining options pop up in the future.

Love,

PD
