Vik and Reynisfjara

On our first full day staying in the Selfoss area, we headed out to Reynisfjara beach and Vik. I had heard and read previously that Vik is a top tourist destination in the south, so I was initially nervous for a crowd.

It was just over an hour drive, which was originally supposed to include a visit to Seljalandsfoss. We could see from a distance that the waterfall was completely packed (both with people and tour buses), so we skipped it.

Reynisfjara was our first stop.

The black sand beach has a lot of interesting formations including basalt pillars and caves, and huge rocky outcrops just offshore.

Most people were snapping photos on the basalt pillars that the beach is famous for, so we walked as far as we could in the other direction 😜

At first I thought this formation looked like a group of ships, but the more I looked, the more it seemed like a crown.

Reynisdrangar, this specific outcrop, is said to be trolls turned to stone after failing to drag a ship to shore (I found this out later and feel like my assessment is not entirely wrong 🤔).

Of course Peter has to climb something.

Done at the beach, we made our way to Vik for soup and sammies at The Soup Company. Everything was delicious; we all cleared our plates.

The beach was just a short walk through town, and well worth it for the flowers, views of the church, and emptiness of the beach.

It seems everywhere we stop, there’s something beautiful to be seen.

Love,

PD
